From Country to City

When I was a little girl, my big dream was to live in a big and beautiful city. That dream came true. I come from a small town in Tipperary. I was never a home bird as I loved to go on sleepovers, be it my friends or cousins house. When I was in Transition Year(age 16) in school, I moved to a boarding school. Here, I lived away from home 5 days a week and I loved it! Every time I came home I enjoyed my home comforts but there is only so long I can stay at home without going crazy. I always like to be busy and keeping myself occupied. I want to be out there living my life rather than just sitting on a couch all day watching re-runs of Sex and the City( I do this like once a week though).

I was very lucky to land a place in my course when I finished my Leaving Cert(age 19). I dreamed of going to college in Dublin that whole year. I worked really hard to earn that place because I knew there was hope for me up there. I will never forget that day when the CAO results were uploaded online and I saw that I got accepted into Dublin Institute of Technology. It was the beginning of my new life.

When I arrived to Dublin, it was a realisation that I was now an adult. It was hard to believe I was no embracing this big, bad world all by myself. But everyone knew I could handle Dublin, the question was, could Dublin handle me?

Going from the country to a city is scary. But if you are like me, confident and open-minded, you will love it. Never expect you will know the city off by heart, most Dubliners don't know Dublin as well as I do. Never be scared, yes it can come across as a scary city where everyone might want to kill you. But I can safely say, Dublin is one of the friendliest nation I have come across. Everyone is so open to meeting new people and strangers are always there to guide you if needs be.

If you are a home bird, embrace it! You are about to see the real world. You are about to see what its like to not be surrounded by farms! The city gives a feeling a hope, so never be afraid to be yourself. Mix up your style, try new foods and meet new people. This is what life is about. As everyone says, you are only young once and this is where you can do anything.

Whether its Dublin, Galway or Cork, the city life is my way of life. My mother always says I'll always be a culchie at heart. You can take me out of the city, but you can't take me out of the city.

Stay tuned for more chaos,

JB
