Jess' Tips for Moving and Packing

So last Tuesday, I moved home for the third time this year. I know, crazy right? As I went to boarding school and have lived in two student campus' in Dublin, its safe to say I am a pro at packing! It only took me an hour to pack nearly everything I own into bags. So if some of you might be moving to a different place for college or you a moving home, here are my top tips for packing that I hope might make it less stressful and more enjoyable.

Put some music on.

What has this got to do with packing you might ask? Well, moving and packing everything you own can be quite over-whelming. You will be sad to leave one place but excited to start a new life in the next place. Music is that one thing that everyone can relate to whether its happy or sad music. All you have to do is put what ever music you want and just let the packing begin. Start where the music takes you.

Stay positive.

If you are dreading the whole big move, please try and stay positive. It is hard moving and packing up your whole life into brown boxes and bin bags. But try and focus on the positive things, its a new chapter of your life. You will experience new things, get a taste of a new area and meet new people. It okay it be scared, but you will learn so much from these things that will stick to you down the road in your life.

Clear out.

Moving is the perfect opportunity to go through everything you own from the t shirts at the bottom of your drawer to a pen under your bed. You have to go through everything and you might find things you never realised you owned or you forgot you had. A lot of memories will rush back when you find different items that mean or meant something. But you need to decide if you really need this item or not.

Donate.

With all those unwanted items, don't throw all of them into the bin. If they are items that are clean and good quality, why not donate to a charity shop. By doing this, you are giving something to someone who might love that item and you will feel good after giving something. For you, you might think that item is useless and its no good, but you might be taking it for granted. Some people who are less well off might want that item. So think before you throw!

Bin bags vs boxes

If you are moving to somewhere near and don't have much valuable things, try and use bin bags. They are much more flexible because you can fill loads in them and you can pile them on each other without breaking anything. Boxes are move suitable for more valuable items and they take up a lot of space. Bin bags are cheap and you can bin them straight away and seeing as I am moving to close areas, bin bags were definitely an easier option than boxes as I mostly just have clothes. For my small baskets full of jewellery and small bits, I put them into shopping bags so they are easy to take out and they don't get thrown around in bin bags.

Double check.

When you are moving, double check every aspect of the whole apartment or house. You need to make sure you are not forgetting anything. Firstly make sure you have your important stuff like your most precious possessions. Then just check an area, even places you would never look to make sure you picked up any of your belongings.

Clean.

Yes, we all don't like cleaning. But seeing as someone might be moving into your room or its becoming someone’s new home, out of respect you should leave it the way you found it. You want someone to arrive to their new home with a smile to see its all clean and tidy. So pop down to your nearest shop and pick up some cleaning supplies. Playing music might make it more fun ;) .

Like with Like

Try to keep everything together. Put all your t shirts in one bag, jackets in another etc. This makes it easier to find something you are looking for. But who will you know what’s in what bag? Read on!

Lets get organised.

So you arrived into your new home , you sit on the bed and now you are trying to figure out where your pj's are! Nightmare? To avoid this, label everything! Get some labels and permanent markers so that when you have packed one bag or box, write on the label what’s in the box so its easier to find everything.

So I hope this helps in some little way. If you have any other tips, comment below so it might help others. Like I said, you are starting a new and over-whelming chapter in your life, so keep your head up and stay positive!

Stay tuned for more chaos,

JB
